Quick verdict
HelloFresh if you want the widest weekly menu, consistent 30-minute recipes, and don't need to customize proteins. Home Chef if you swap proteins often, want 15-minute lunch kits, or feed a family of 4+. Both cost the same per serving in the .99–11.99 range once the intro discount is gone.
How we compared them
Five criteria that actually matter for weeknight cooking: price per serving, prep time honesty, menu variety, protein flexibility, and how forgiving the recipes are when you're distracted.
Price per serving
Both brands anchor their marketing on the intro offer — HelloFresh currently offers up to 65% off the first box, Home Chef puts 18 free meals in a bundle. After that intro, both settle into .99–1.99 per serving depending on plan size and add-ons. A 4-person family plan is slightly cheaper per serving on Home Chef; a 2-person plan is a wash.
Where you actually save money: order the 4-recipe/4-serving plan (16 servings) rather than smaller plans. Both brands price bigger orders at meaningful discounts. Also — always skip weeks you know you won't cook. The subscription auto-charges if you don't.
Prep time: are they honest?
HelloFresh labels recipes 15/25/30/45 minutes. In our testing over dozens of boxes, the 30-minute recipes take 35–40 minutes if you include reading the card and washing up as you go. The 15-minute Fast & Fresh line is genuinely quick — those are honest.
Home Chef labels recipes similarly and runs about 5 minutes over its own estimates on the standard line. Their 15-Minute Meal Kits and Oven-Ready Trays are the fastest option in either brand — the oven-ready trays are dump-and-bake with under 5 minutes of active prep.
Menu variety
HelloFresh publishes 40+ recipes each week across all categories (family, quick, vegetarian, calorie-smart). Home Chef publishes 30+ but includes formats HelloFresh doesn't — lunch kits, oven-ready trays, and single-serve entrees.
If you cook 3 nights a week and want to never repeat, HelloFresh gives you a bigger pool to draw from. If you rotate breakfast bowls, quick lunches, and dinners, Home Chef's format variety is worth more than the total count.
Protein flexibility
This is where Home Chef wins clearly. Their Customize It feature lets you swap the default protein on most recipes — sub chicken for shrimp, ground beef for plant-based, etc. — for a small upcharge. HelloFresh has protein upgrades on select recipes, but you can't swap the base protein.
If you have picky eaters, allergies, or you want to double up the protein for a workout-heavy week, Home Chef's flexibility is worth an extra dollar per serving.
Forgiveness on a distracted night
This one's underrated. Meal kits are supposed to save you thinking, but a poorly-designed recipe punishes you if you miss a step. In our tests:
- HelloFresh recipes have larger, better-photographed cards and clearer sequencing. Easier to follow when the kids are yelling.
- Home Chef cards are more compact and lean on ingredient photos. Fine, but you'll re-read a step more often.
- Both have online recipe pages that mirror the card — useful when you spill something on the physical one.
Who each is for
HelloFresh is right for you if: you want a big weekly menu, cook the same 2–4 recipes each week, and value clear instructions over customization. Solid default choice for meal-kit first-timers.
Home Chef is right for you if: you swap proteins often, need format variety (lunch, dinner, oven-ready), or feed 4+ people. Also the better pick if you like tinkering with your order each week.
The honest downside of both
Packaging waste. Both brands ship a lot of small plastic bags and ice packs. If sustainability weighs on your choice, know that going in — neither brand has solved this, despite the marketing.
Also: the intro offer is designed to hook you. Both re-price aggressively at week 4 or 5 once the discount runs out. Cancel and re-sign-up as a "new customer" is a strategy some households use.
Bottom line
Both are legitimate weeknight-cooking shortcuts. For most households, the choice comes down to whether you'll actually use Home Chef's customization (get Home Chef) or you're happy with a fixed weekly menu (get HelloFresh). If you're stuck, HelloFresh's onboarding is smoother — start there.
