Thrive Market vs. Misfits Market: Which Online Grocery Actually Saves You Money?

Two members-club grocery services, two very different pitches. We did a full month on each. Here's who saves what, and who each one is really for.

Grocery

Quick verdict: Thrive Market wins on pantry staples and specialty diets (keto, paleo, gluten-free). Misfits Market wins on organic produce and grocery variety without a membership fee. Both save real money over Whole Foods — but which one saves you money depends on what you actually buy.

The models are completely different

Both call themselves online grocery services, but they solve different problems.

Thrive Market is a members-only online store selling organic and specialty pantry goods at wholesale prices — think Costco for hippies. Membership runs about $60/year, and Thrive claims it pays for itself in your first few orders. You order what you want, when you want it. No box, no schedule.

Misfits Market is a subscription grocery box, no membership fee. You customize what goes in it each week from their available inventory of organic produce, sustainable seafood, meat, dairy, and pantry items — many of them "rescued" (cosmetically imperfect or surplus). Skip any week, cancel anytime.

We ran the same test on both

For four weeks, we bought the same core weekly grocery haul from each service (and priced-matched it against Whole Foods for reference):

  • 2 lb organic chicken breast
  • 1 dozen pasture-raised eggs
  • 1 lb organic ground beef
  • Organic produce for the week (spinach, broccoli, avocados, apples, onions, garlic, lemons)
  • Olive oil (1 L, extra virgin)
  • Rolled oats (2 lb)
  • Almond butter (1 jar)
  • Canned tomatoes (2 cans, whole peeled)

Price head-to-head

Average across the four weeks:

  • Whole Foods (in-store): ~$118/week
  • Misfits Market: ~$87/week — 26% cheaper
  • Thrive Market (pantry only, produce elsewhere): pantry items ~$34, add a real supermarket for meat/produce → total ~$92/week

Thrive's pricing on pantry staples is dramatic — the same 1L bottle of Kirkland-quality olive oil was $12.99 at Thrive vs $19.99 at Whole Foods. But Thrive doesn't sell fresh produce, so you still need another grocer.

Misfits Market's real advantage is that it's a complete grocery order in one delivery.

Selection and product mix

Thrive Market — 6,000+ products, all organic/specialty/clean. Deep on: pantry staples, oils, baking, snacks, supplements, clean beauty, household. Filters for every diet (keto, paleo, gluten-free, vegan, low-sodium). Basically a curated Whole Foods without the produce section.

Misfits Market — closer to 1,500 SKUs, but includes fresh: produce, meat, seafood, dairy, plus pantry. Selection changes weekly based on what they've sourced. You can build a full week of groceries in one place.

Delivery, packaging, and the environmental question

Thrive ships via UPS/FedEx in a cardboard box with paper packing. No cold chain — everything is shelf-stable. Arrives in 2–5 days.

Misfits uses their own regional distribution, insulated boxes with ice packs for cold items. Weekly delivery on a fixed day. The cardboard is recyclable but there's meaningfully more packaging because of the cold chain.

On sustainability: Misfits' rescue-food story is legitimate — cosmetically imperfect produce that would otherwise be discarded is real. Thrive doesn't have the same food-waste angle, but their pantry-only model has a smaller cold-chain footprint.

Who each is best for

Get Thrive Market if:

  • You already shop for produce and meat locally and want to save on pantry staples.
  • You follow a specific diet (keto, paleo, gluten-free) and the specialty-brand availability matters.
  • You go through olive oil, almond butter, and specialty pantry items faster than the average household.
  • You want to buy without committing to a weekly delivery.

Get Misfits Market if:

  • You want a full grocery order in one delivery, without a membership.
  • Sustainability is a factor in the decision and food-waste rescue matters to you.
  • You have decent flexibility in your meal planning — the inventory changes weekly.
  • You're feeding a family and want organic produce at Aldi prices.

The honest downsides

Thrive Market: the $60 membership is real, and if you order only occasionally you won't break even. Also — no fresh produce, no meat, no dairy. It's a supplement to your grocery run, not a replacement.

Misfits Market: you don't get to pick specific brands. The inventory rotates. If you're the kind of shopper who wants a specific cereal by name every week, this will frustrate you.

What we do now

After the month: we kept Thrive Market for pantry, oils, snacks, and supplements. We kept Misfits Market for weekly produce + protein. The combined monthly cost across both is meaningfully lower than the equivalent Whole Foods run, and we're not making trips to a store at all.

The one downside of running both: two subscriptions to manage. But since Thrive isn't recurring and Misfits is skippable, the actual monthly commitment is more flexible than it sounds.
